Stars & Lights fire-up Bora!

The last remaining moments of summer are barely left to savor as the rainy season is upon us. As many of us clamor to soak up the last remnants of the fun in the sun, fashionistas have less to fear as the summer’s hottest trends still carry into the upcoming months as local celebrities recently celebrated on the powdery sands of Boracay island!

Levi’s owned Boracay with the most sizzling summer party ever to hit the island at the Pearl of the Pacific Hotel beachfront. Levi’s held the biggest, most amazing laser light and fashion show, celebrating the exciting presentation of their new Levi’s Square Cut Colour Collection. Sexy fire-dancers started the festivities, emblazoning the theme in the minds and hearts of all spectators. Starting the fashion show with a bang, the laser light show was the first of its kind here in the country. Levi’s also invaded the island as they hosted simultaneous events in both Ti Braz and Juice Bar.

World body holds NOYNOY on vow to fight CORRUPTION

The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption, or Gopac, has called on President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd to deliver on his promises that he would rid government of corruption and keep his administration off government coffers, Sen. Edgardo Angara reported over the weekend.

Aquino's campaign platform in the May 10 election focused on stopping corruption and bringing positive change in Philippine bureaucracy.

Angara attended a recent executive committee meeting of Gopac in Canada during which he was asked by the executive board to convey their call to the newly elected Aquino and his administratin.

Gopac is the only parliamentary network with the singular focus on combating corruption. Its current 900-strong membership represents over 90 countries in all the regions of the world.

Angara, who sits in the executive board of the Canada-based organization, said the group voted to hold its biennial conference in 2013 in Manila.

“Hosting a conference that would gather the world’s parliamentarians to unite behind fighting corruption perfectly fits the Aquino agenda of fighting corruption in the government. This would be an opportunity to link up with parliaments all over the world who are confronting the same challenge of eliminating corruption from our institutions,” he said.

He himself called for a national strategy to fight corruption, involving both the public and private sectors.

“Multilateral institutions like the World Bank, IMF [Inetrnational Monetary Fund] and ADB [Asian Development Bank] have long come to the conclusion that there is a linear relationship between corruption and development, that the public sector cannot do it alone, the private sector and civil society must get firmly on board. But most important, there should be a national strategy so that the various sectors can perform their roles in a concentrated and coordinated manner,” he said.

Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose Brillantes supported and provided necessary staff support during the executive board meeting and welcomed the hosting of Gopac’s biennial conference in Manila.

In September of this year, the group will hold a meeting of its global taskforce committee in Manila that will be hosted by the Philippine Senate.

As the only Asian representative in Gopac’s executive board, Angara initiated the organization in April 2005 of the Southeast Asia Parliamentarians Against Corruption, or Seapac, with 26 parliamentarian-members from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Gopac’s founding conference was held in Ottawa 2002, followed by its second Global Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, in 2006, then in Kuwait 2008 and the most recent conference in Mexico City in 2009. BY FRANCIS EARL A. CUETO
