President-elect Noynoy Aquino’s CNN interview yesterday showed him to be a supremely articulate person with a wise understanding of the Philippine situation. The interview, we believe, proves his critics wrong in their insistence that he lacks the qualities of a president.

The CNN interview proves that he speaks English more idiomatically than a lot of other senators and congressmen. In fact his spoken conversational English is as good as, maybe even better than, that of the other presidents before him. He never groped for words. His mind was always clear about what to say immediately in response to every question posed to him by CNN interviewer Ms. Arwa Damon.

He was asked about his feelings and thoughts about being a very young man when his father, the late lamented Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, was jailed during the Marcos martial law regime, and then was assassinated when he came home from exile. We are sure many Filipinos felt a catch in their throats when the President-elect answered these questions matter-of-factly and not squeezing the moment for political points as the many less dignified Filipino politicians would have done.

But the most poignant moment in the interview was when he was asked how he would deal with the Marcoses who have indubitably made a decisive comeback in Philippine politics. Former first lady Imelda Marcos, wife of former President Ferdinand Marcos, has been elected Ilocos Norte representative. Her children, siblings Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Ma. Imelda “Imee” Marcos, were elected senator and Ilocos Norte governor. They ran under the Nacionalista Party of defeated presidential candidate Senator Manuel P. Villar.

President-elect Noynoy said he is ready to cooperate with the Marcoses for as long as their moves are for the betterment of the people, but he would be the first to oppose attempts to bring back the dark years of military rule. “The only interest I have is to make sure that there is no revisionism down the line lest we make the same mistakes,” the President-elect explained. He said he has no grudges against the Marcos siblings. “As far as the [Marcos] children are concerned, I think I am in the same boat as they are. We are all victims of the rule of their parents, the only difference is that that I recognize it and they don’t,” said Aquino.

In the CNN’s own report about the interview with Mr. Aquino, the writer said the network’s “allotted time of 30 minutes stretched to more than an hour.”

“His critics often described him as elitist, weak and inexperienced and questioned his psychological make-up. [But] The Aquino we interviewed turned out to be disarmingly down-to-earth, sharp and engaging. He gave lengthy answers, as he was known for, but showed a keen and detailed understanding of a wide range of issues.”

He will defend the rights of enemies

Another point made by the President-elect that is catching the international media’s attention is his pledge that his administration’s human rights policy is to defend the rights even of enemies.

Mr. Aquino also told CNN that on the subject of prosecuting corrupt officials, his administration will be dictated by law and evidence not by personal grudges.

This response from Mr. Aquino came when he was asked about how he would pursue his campaign vow to go after outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her allies, whom his opposition camp had unrelentingly assailed for allegedly being corrupt. Questions pertaining to the Marcoses also elicited these remarks.

Mr. Aquino explained that his prosecutors “will not file charges against somebody who’s a political opponent and then try to find evidence afterward. We should afford them the processes that were not utilized in our case. We have to prove that we are different from them.” Prosecution, he added, will only be pursued so long as the evidence warrants it. He added that having this mindset in dealing with alleged wrongdoers is the “true test of democracy.”

The number seven engraved on the woman’s arms is a biblical symbolism, representing the beginning and the end, sin and pain.”

His other personal favorite is called "The Punishing of Forgiveness" with Cherie Gil as the model. It’s his personal introspection on Forgiveness. As Niccolo relates, “There are some people whom I have not reconciled with for a very long time now, and it's punishing me. Being unforgiving is punishment to myself, and I have learned that reconciliation starts from within. A person who has forgiven himself for his wrongdoings will be able to forgive others.”

The Joy of Working with Cherie Gil and Katrina Halili

Two celebrities were personally invited by Niccolo for a special exhibit masterpiece. One was Cherie Gil, whom he has worked with on his first commercial collaboration with Maldita. He felt Cherie Gil was the best to portray “Forgiveness”, and shooting her was like watching a theatrical play or movie where she projected in full character while swaying with the music, and demonstrated true professionalism 110%.

Niccolo also chose Katrina Halili, as they are good friends. He knew she can best portray the Eve-like character for the "Return to Innocence". The artwork is about the idea of emptying one’s mind and heart to have a new space to understand hidden truths. Niccolo narrates, “We are like an empty jar that becomes full when filled up with knowledge, faith, tradition, and culture.” In the artwork, the Eve-like character eats a lot of apples trying to find answers in life, and the celebration is not in the outcome but is actually in the journey of openness and being hungry for life.

It was a busy week on Magic 89.9’s Good Times as we started live streaming on PLDT MyDSL’s Watchpad. Opening up the show to a whole new audience online, what was once only radio has now blurred the lines of entertainment media as the formerly solely aural format has to it added a interestingly visual hype.

Other than getting a sneak peak at our newest co-host of the show, Angelika Cruz (known to her fans better as the lovable Angelicopter), Good Times welcomed its first musical guest on Watchpad – none other than the lead vocalist/keyboardist of pinoy rock band Armi Millare!

Up Darma Down with a twist

Armi’s guesting follows her bagging of best female vocalist at the prestigious AVIMA Awards. Her group Up Darma Down also won accolades the AVIMA for their music video interpretation of their hit song “Sana.” The spellbinding song on its own and it could have conjured up a million different visuals to associate as a music video, but in typical UDD fashion, the final product was a blend of musically magical potpourri.

Sana’s music video, which was directed by Pancho Esguerra, is on a planet of its own, drawing up the good ol’ days of Atari arcade video games, pitting two contestants in a “staged” real life video game to win the heart of their awaiting damsel (there is a twist to the plot right at the end).

Here is what Toti Dalmacion, band manager says: “It’s intentionally not an emotionally charged literal visual to the song for those who are expecting the obvious. I have no idea what the big deal is when one deviates a bit from the norm. There are millions of really good songs with the videos not being an exact narrative of the song and if you really “open” your minds to it… there is a connection. Other than that we like it and that’s that. There’s something about the unexpected if you catch my drift and better than another cliché.”

Armi wowed her fans by stepping out of her comfort zone and doing an impromptu acoustic set on Good Times. Instead of playing the keyboard, she opted to strum it out on the guitar. It was the first time in a long time that Millare has performed without her UDD bandmates. Armi enthralled listeners with her ethereal solo renditions of Up Darma Down classics like “Oo,” “Pag-agos” and of course, the award-winning “Sana.” But the unexpected highlight of the program was when Armi sang a mesmerizing cover of the John Mayer song “Heartbreak Warfare.”

The tournament, held right smack at the middle of a sweltering summer season, offered a cool reprieve from the Boracay heat as people stopped by to chill, watch and treat themselves with tubs of Nestlé Pops. The exciting competition saw match ups between returning and new dodgeball teams as well as guest celebrities who gamely joined the fray.

A celebrity exhibition match saw the Boys Night Out crew (Slick Rick, Toni Tony and Sam YG ) hurling and dodging balls in the sand against broadcaster Tony Gonzales, comedian Maverick, and Magic 89.9 DJs Suzy and Mia, as well as Junior Jocks Tyler and Dale.

Meanwhile, the official competition had the Boracay Strikers besting last year’s champions, the Boracay Dragons, in a breathtaking finals game. The winning team won loads of prizes, including P20,000 in cash.

As a perfect after-sports reward, major sponsor Philips, which held special wellness activities in the island during the same weekend, gave away premium items to the champions and other top teams. Co-sponsor Flawless Face and Body Clinic also handed out special pampering currencies to the participants to complement their long exposure under the summer sun.

Adding some spice to the event were the winning body builders from the recently concluded 3rd Boracay Philippines National Bodybuilding & Figure Championships 2010. It was a battle of brawn and beauty as Mr. & Ms. Flawless and Mr. & Ms. Philips Lifestyle took to the sands for an impromptu pose off for the beachcombers. After flexing their muscles for the Tweetbiz hosts and the hundreds of spectators about the court, they joined the celebrity athletes in battling it out in a fun game of dodgeball before taking a break to munch down some delicious Nestle Pops Ice Cream. They were also able to cool down at the Philips cool-off tent in front of Ti-Braz French-Filipino inspired restaurant. Serious enthusiasts from the Philippine Dodgeball Association (PDBA), who were at hand to officiate the tournament, were excited to see the competition growing in following, noting a thicker crowd in the annual competition’s sophomore year.

“I can see the Summer Dodgeball Games becoming an annual tradition in Boracay, especially because of the evident interest in the sport among both locals and visitors of the island,” said PDBA President Benedict Camara.

“Boracay and dodgeball is a perfect match, especially since both the game and the island are all about summer fun for everyone. Literally anyone can try it out and enjoy it right off the bat, without any special training or equipment” said Camara.

More Pops in the Future

“The sport’s fun factor makes it the perfect partner for our Nestlé Pops ice cream snack,” said Gel Angeles, Consumer Marketing Manager of Nestlé Philippines. According to Camara, UST, UP Diliman, La Salle, FEU, UE, La Consolacion, Miriam, Manila Doctors, UA&P, St.Scholastica Manila, PWU and College of St.Benilde are all slated to participate in the program, while other top schools have expressed interest to join.

Aside from the University Dodgeball Games, dodgeball had also been listed as an official event in the Women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) calendar for the first time ever this year.

“We’re very happy that the WNCAA decided to make dodgeball part of their official schedule,” said Camara. “What Nestlé has managed to achieve with its Dodge N’ Pop beach tournaments is really amazing.”

Playing sports and keeping active and fit is one of the best ways to enjoy the summertime as well as keep yourself busy (they say idleness is the devil’s plaything) – and for this week’s Mojo:lations, it’s a whole different ballgame as I was able to test my skills with some celebrity friends over the weekend. Trying my hand at various sports, it was a star-studded and sweaty but sweet summer experience.

It’s been over a decade since I picked up a basketball, but I revived my game at the Quezon City Circle with the Coca-Cola Tigers and Expedition 206 Happiness Ambassadors. Together with international bloggers Tony Martin and Antonio Santiago, we joined basketball legend Kenneth Duremdes at an impromptu game of hoops with some urban youth. Amazingly, I was able to shoot and score quite well at the free-throw competition.

We picked up a few pointers from the kids and professional ballers on how to improve our game before meeting up with sports star turned celebrity Enchong Dee for an inspiring speech on the importance of sports for Filipino youth. Aiming to discover fresh talents, the Coca-Cola Hoopla (a grassroots-based basketball tournament for players 18 years old and below) was just one of the stops for the Expedition 206 as they visited the Philippines to find out what makes pinoys happy.

It was an adrenaline-pumping climax at Castrol’s final leg of their celebration in commemoration of the 2010 World Cup Finals which will be happening in Johannesburg, South Africa. After a star-studded string of events, celebrities and sports stars alike trooped out to Castrol’s various Soccer Fiestas to root on the competitors and hype up the spectators at hand.

For the past few weeks, Castrol has been travelling to various SM Malls encouraging soccer/football fanatics to try their hand at various skills challenges to compete for an all-expense paid trip to watch the 2010 World Cup finals match. After making a purchase of Castrol products, each competitor put their skills to the test. The objective is to finish the obstacle course at the fastest possible time. The challenges involved basic soccer skills such as dribbling, juggling, shooting, passing and shuttle running.

The competition has been staged in what is called the Castrol Arena in each participating SM mall. The Castrol Arena is a mini-futsal court supervised by the Futbol Sa Kalye (Futkal) non-profit group that promotes soccer in depressed areas in Metro Manila. The “Futkaleros” are headed by former La Salle player Peter Amores.

SM North’s “The Block” was the venue for the competition awarding, and it was filled to the brim with spectators. There was a quick showbiz recap thanking the celebs that celebrities that had participated in the Soccer Fiesta 2010. Some personalities that showed their support for the sport were model/actress Daiana Meneses, sportscaster Lia Cruz, newsman TJ Manotoc, basketball star Wesley Gonzales, celebrity couple Chynna Ortaleza & Railey Valeroso, VJ/actress Denise Laurel, Magic 89.9’s Boys Night Out DJs, and more. Showing off his fancy moves and amazing soccer skills, international football freestyler star Philip Warren Gertsson was also at hand to add some high-energy excitement to the Soccer Fiesta program!

While many have began taking up the game after the release of that 2004 cinematic classic Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, dodgeball in the country has up until now been the reserve of a small handful of in-the-know weekend players.

After the celebrity kick-off for the University Dodgeball Games, a joint project between the PDBA and Nestle Ice Cream that seeks to get more Filipino interested in the sport, more and more Filipinos have tried their hand at the game! Over the course of the University Dodgeball Games, the PDBA will be visiting some of the top schools in the country to conduct dodgeball trainer certification programs for PE teachers, free Dodgeball clinics for students, as well as actual competitive matches.

Online and on the radio, I’ve been counting down the days until the Expedition 206 bloggers touchdown on Philippine shores and now the time has arrived! After winning an innovative online contest, Coca-Cola’s “Happiness Ambassadors” Antonio Santiago, Kelly Ferris and Tony Martin have finally landed in Manila last Saturday and imbibed Filipino culture and hospitality.

This blogging trio was chosen from a pool of netizens from all over the world through an online voting process on the Expedition206.com website. Now Toño, Kelly and Tony have become overnight celebrities as they get to travel to the 206 countries where Coke is sold in just 365 days. Chris Tiu & Lexi Schulze break their Silence

Chris Tiu understands the responsibility of fame

Undoubtedly one of the most appealing and talented young Filipino athletes to break through public consciousness, Chris Tiu is no stranger to fame and admiration. For the 24-year-old Management Engineering graduate from Ateneo de Manila University, however, it is not all just about the spotlight.

Despite being a champion basketball team captain, the face of several endorsements and the host of several TV shows, Chris remains admirably unassuming with a grounded view on celebrity and fame.

“It is important for me to always value my work in any field I engage in. I think if we treat our jobs and our colleagues with a lot of respect, then we are creating an environment where good values prevail,” says Chris with conviction rarely seen in young celebrities.

“The opportunity to have a certain amount of fame gives someone the chance, and more importantly, the responsibility to transmit and relay the right values to others,” added Chris. True to his conviction, Chris has taken up various social advocacies, including building decent and affordable housing projects for the poor, leading literacy sessions for street kids, and promoting Filipino volunteerism, among others.

Fighting for a Cause

Now, Chris is lending his voice to “Help Fight HPV” a concerted call to raise awareness on an insidious virus that affects both men and women, but has long been viewed as an exclusive female issue. “I was alarmed when I found out that approximately 12 Filipinas die each day from cervical cancer. More so, when I learned that even men can be infected by the Human Papillomavirus or HPV and pass the infection on to women,” revealed Chris.

HPV infection is a common, and highly communicable infection among men and women. Most infections resolve on their own. However, for those that persist, diseases such as genital warts, cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases can develop.

Chris agrees on the urgent need to convey a strong message on the risks of HPV. “Times are changing and the values of the youth have now become more liberal. This more liberal attitude may increase the chance of acquiring HPV infections,” he propounds.

In order to reach people, a TV ad to help promote awareness about HPV related diseases was conceptualized. Creative agency AM&P, which has been behind the concept of the groundbreaking campaign for the past three years, has again tapped commercial director Gus Cruz to helm the TV ad.

Gus said Chris and his co-advocate Lexi Schulze--a socially active, versatile media personality, and a new mom--worked well in representing the modern Filipino male and female concerned about health and mortality.

their “Rock N’ Rogue” concert

Known as one of the best musicians in the country, and certainly at par with foreign counterparts, Urbandub celebrates a decade in their career and shares how their instruments are the other half of their success.

“Tools of the trade ‘yan. The better yung gamit, the better yung output,” said Gabby Alipe, lead vocals and guitarist of Urbandub. “The instruments help a lot kasi kung pangit yung gamit mo, then you play live, you cannot translate what you want to say in your music.”

Affordability and quality counts in their choice of tools, and one local music store provide them just that. “From their guitars, acoustics and selection of their products, it’s the industry standard that we like to use. The technical riders din namin when we go out of town, yun din ang nirerequest namin sa mga production to provide for us which JB Music carries.”

Two years ago, Urbandub signed with JB Music as part of its roster of endorsers. But their history with the music store started way before. “In the beginnings of Urbandub, our picks, strings, guitars, most of our gears are from JB Music. One of my first guitars which I used in a couple of our recordings, I bought it in JB Music.” Gabby revealed.

When writing songs, having good instruments gives them the confidence as well. Last year, the band released their fifth studio album “Apparition”, said to be their most experimental album to date. The singles “Gravity” and “Call to Arms” proved to be chart-toppers.

For Gabby, as cliché as it may sound, through the years their music has become more matured. “As we get older, in a way, we have more experiences. If you listen to our album, the guitar playing, the tightness of the band as a whole improved. We’d like to think even the subject, the topic we talked about. The early years it was mostly relationship, heartbreaks, and what-not. Now it has a more social theme to the album “

An industry friend attributed the band’s fruitful career to their passion. “Their love for music. They’re doing it for the music, not for the show. They do it because they love playing music,” shares Jerico Fernando Salonga, VP-Sales and Marketing of JB Music and Managing Partner of J2unes Production.

Their upcoming concert will be a retrospective of the band’s career. “We’re going to play songs from the first album up to the present and we’re going to play the best that we can. Parang thank you narin namin sa mga [Dubistas]. To show them our gratitude for supporting the band,” said Gabby.

Other band members are John Dinopol (guitar, backing vocals), Lalay Lim (bass guitar, backing vocals), and JanJan Mendoza (drums).

Jamie Cullum releases his eagerly awaited fifth album entitled “The Pursuit”. This, his first solo album in four years, is a combination of his eclectic music tastes and enduring love of Jazz and its timeless standards. “In life, we pursue everything. Life is one long pursuit,” says Jamie.

Julio stated, “In 10 years, there will be 200 million Filipinos & 3 of those are mine” (referring to his 3 children with first wife, Filipina Isabel Preysler) and even joked with the audience that he is a “master” of Filipino food.

“I know good adobo, pancit, & lumpia when I taste them,” said Julio with a smile before performing with the country’s megastar Sharon Cuneta. Aside from singing “All of You” and “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” with the renowned Latin artist, Sharon also sang the classic Filipino love song “Dahil Sa’yo” with Julio, making the audience swoon. The lyrics to the classic Filipino song were even projected on giant screens around the Big Dome for fans to join them in singing.

During his concert, Julio was clearly teary-eyed when he recalled how Mr. Araneta (who he lovingly calls “Jorge”) told him about what happened during typhoon Ondoy. He said “I am very thankful that I have everything I need but I am guilty for those Filipinos who lost their homes & their lives because of the typhoon. That is why I, as an artist, have to help them as much as I can, in whatever way I can. And I am thankful to all of you for buying your tickets and doing your part to also help these typhoon victims. ”

Iglesias’ “Heart of Gold” concert was held in celebration of Araneta Coliseum’s Golden Anniversary, to benefit the people who were the primary reason for the existence of the country’s mecca of sports and entertainment. In a great act of kindness, Julio waived his talent fee for the concert. To match his generosity, the Big Dome likewise waived its rental fee while all the proceeds of ticket sales will also be turned over to the beneficiaries. While speaking of crazy videos, the pop princess that “Kissed a Girl,” who is known for her wacky fashion sense, and melodramatic (and sometimes controversial) music videos is coming to perform on Philippine shores! It’s Official! All Youth Channels, Inc. bagged the hippest concert of the year: Katy Perry Live in Manila on October 3, 2009 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds. The concert will also feature a special performance from Boys Like Girls! The one-night-only concert is another event under the MTV Philippines Live Concert Series.

The Philippines’ premier choral group, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, have worked tirelessly over almost five full decades to bring the Filipino’s incomparable choral gift to the world to touch hearts and improve lives through their performances and training of up-and-coming choral talents. These hard-traveling singers, the latest in a long line of proud Madz generations, were brought together in 1963 for the first time by Philippine National Artist for Music, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. Their name has since become synonymous with peerless vocal skill, performance quality, individual discipline, and musical diversity. The Madz have spent the last few decades winning choral competitions such as the European Grand Prix – widely understood to be the Olympics of the choral circuit, which they have won twice (1997 and 2007) – and reaching out to budding choirs from all corners of the Philippines via the Madz Et Al choral network. The latter has enabled many of these choirs to compete abroad and win, as well as continue the practice of giving back to their own communities. They have been recognized as UNESCO Artists for Peace “in recognition of their efforts to promote dialogue and understanding among peoples in Southeast Asia , their contribution to extend UNESCO’s message of peace and tolerance, and their dedication to the ideals and aims of the Organization.”

Stars join “Brilyante” for Women's Health

In celebration of women’s strength, health and vitality, the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority of the UP College of Medicine is organizing a gala dinner and glamorous fashion presentation dubbed “Brilyante: The Empowered Woman.” Joining their effort are a slew of prominent and compassionate female celebrities ready to advocate their cause.

Gynecologic oncologist Dr. Genara Manuel - Limson, Mu Sigma Phi Sorority ’59 and chair of Brilyante, revealed that cancer of the cervix is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among Filipino women. “It is also the second most common cancer among women, the first being breast cancer. Every year, an estimated 6,000 Filipino women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than half of them die of this disease. Five out of 10 Filipino women with cervical cancer will die within five years,” adds Dr. Limson.

The star-studded event promotes a positive outlook and a proactive stance for women faced with this disease. To be held on August 28, 2009 at the NBC Tent in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, this event is both a campaign for awareness on cervical cancer and other diseases caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, and a fund-raising activity for the benefit of the Cervical Cancer Prevention (CECAP) Network Program and the Service Committee of the Sorority. The theme is also designed to highlight the Sorority’s 75th, or Diamond, anniversary as it continues to expand its shining influence on the health concerns of Filipino women.

“Part of our thrust for women empowerment is our advocacy for cervical cancer awareness and other diseases caused by HPV. We have always dedicated ourselves to championing worthwhile causes – and one of the most pressing medical concerns right now is the issue of cervical cancer among women,” said UP-PGH OB-Gyn Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Angela Rodriguez - Bandola, Mu Sigma Phi Sorority '99 and co-chair of Brilyante.

Brilyante gathers some of the country’s most prominent and promising fashion designers, namely: Delby Bragais, Tina Daniac, Rhett Eala, Jun Escario, Parrish Espiritu Carlos, Veejay Floresca, JM Goulbourn, Oj Hofer, Michelle Lim, Richie Ortega, Randy Ortiz and Philip Rodriguez. In cooperation with the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP), the designs will be donned by professional models and prominent society members, such as ramp veteran Tweetie de Leon – Gonzalez, model-actress-TV host Angel Jacob, commercial model-TV host-radio disc jockey Grace Lee and Trade Ambassador Mela Bengzon. Also sashaying down the runway are sorority members who are prominent doctors in their chosen fields of medicine, and cancer survivors.

“I decided to join the advocacy because many of my close relatives have battled cancer,” says Grace Lee. “ I know how it can drain a family financially, emotionally and mentally. One way to prevent this from happening is to promote awareness and prevention. Women now have a choice now to protect ourselves from HPV.”

Partnering with the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority in the advocacy is global research-based pharmaceutical company, Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD), that has been actively promoting awareness about HPV, which is the cause of cervical cancer. Through support of this advocacy, MSD encourages women to help protect themselves and get vaccinated, not only against cervical cancer, but against other HPV-related diseases, such as vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, and genital warts.

Intersection, an adrenaline-fuelled animation that provides a hard-hitting look at human trafficking and sexual exploitation in Asia. The half-hour anime features the voices of Ely Buendia, Dingdong Dantes, Anne Curtis, Epi Quizon and Dolly Anne Carvajal. Intersection premiered yesterday on MTV Philippines but will re-air July 26 at 3pm; July 29 at 5:30pm; August 1 at 9pm; August 3 at 10:30pm; August 13 at 8:30pm.

“We’re using a different medium, animation, to alert young people about the risks of human trafficking,” said Olivier Carduner, USAID’s Mission Director for Asia . “It adds to the body of work – documentaries, music videos, film shorts, concert specials and public service announcements – that MTV and USAID have released to reach potential victims and to promote law enforcement and victim outreach efforts.”

Richard Gutierrez in controversy once more
Actor Richard Gutierrez was charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide by the wife of his bodyguard who died in a car crash with him on May 22 in Silang, Cavite.

The case was filed by Lorayne Pardo, 29, of 1763 F.B. Harrizon Street, Pasay City, who is the wife of Gutierrez’s production assistant, Nomar Pardo. The preliminary hearing is set on August 15 at the Prosecutor’s Office in Imus, Cavite.

According to the Fiscal’s Office in Imus, Lorayne personally filed the criminal charge of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Gutierrez, 25, of Mckinley Street, Makati City.

According to records, the car crash happened late morning of May 22 as Gutierrez and Pardo were riding a car (ZTU 775) when it fell from a cliff. The car was a total wreck and Nomar died instantly and Gutierrez was thrown outside the car and escaped serious injuries.

Lorayne said that she has not asked for any monetary consideration from the actor and has not received any amount from him or his family.

This Richard Gutierrez controversy comes on the heels of a recent slew of alleged altercations involving the young star. A few days ago, Boldstar of the influential society blog, www.donavictorina.com posted:

[Last October 17, Richard Gutierrez and Aljur Abrenica had a confrontation at the Fiamma Bar on Jupiter Street in Makati City. PEP reported “according to the stunned customer, he distinctly saw Richard giving Aljur's head a short, quick slap.” A similar incident was again reported by PEP- a scuffle happened between him and Michael Flores. Richard went on to sue PEP - Atty. T. Angelica Y. Santiago, legal counsel for Richard told the media that Richard Gutierrez is seeking P25 million in damages.

When Richard Gutierrez filed a libel case against Joann Maglipon and others (PEP staffer) obviously with the urging of his mother and supported by his sister, I was delirious with contempt. The aforementioned article was uploaded and pulled within 3 hours. For that, the Gutierrez family wanted 25 million pesos. Based on his claim, malice existed on the article with the words “gun toting” creating an implied notion that a “deadly weapon” was used.

Well, first of all a lot of men carry guns in the Philippines. Even the guards of Pizza Hut in SM Cebu had a revolver and a shotgun. Ditto most of the politicians. Secondly, how can one deduce that gun toting is understood by many as “use of a deadly weapon”?

It’s really a case of creating mountains out of a molehill. This is an actor or an entertainment personality who courts the media at every opportunity. To be precise, the family begs the public to watch their movies, short of being a chickenhead in the ghetto.

Lucky for him the article allegedly false was not about him kissing a man. My gash what would that do to his alleged macho reputation? Qui horror!

To save you the legalese, the DOJ dismissed the claim on two grounds. As you might recall Victorina’s post on libel, authored by Atty Trixie, stated that the existence of probable cause depends on satisfying all 4 elements of libel.

a) Imputation of a discreditable act or condition to another

b) Publication of Imputation

c) Identity of the person detained

d) Existence of Malice

Elements A and D according to the DOJ were not sufficiently established. Anyway no one would have known about it if not for the ex Mrs Yilmaz Bektas blabbing to all and sundry of the Philippines through her Ruffa and Ai Show and SNN. Maybe he should sue his own sister for being a blithering blabber mouth. To think that Annabelle hides behind freedom of speech whenever caught with her vitriol towards people who disagrees with her or people she cannot bamboozle.

Carlo Ople wrote that “bloggers and online communities are very particular with their right to free speech. The moment someone attempts to attack that, they will retaliate – and they will do so without mercy. People who comment in posts and bloggers are not covered by ethical codes of conduct and they will do whatever they want to do – which maybe a good and bad thing. My point here is that Rama and her son are both asking for more pain.”]

Akon Concert Postponed

Akon fans still have something to celebrate. Due to unforeseen events, Akon’s concert at the Araneta Coliseum (which was supposed to be held last week) has been rescheduled to October 23, 2009 at the same venue.

In its letter dated June 28, 2009, Akon’s management outfit, represented by American Talent Agency Inc. President Matthew Mateo, released to this statement: “Due to unforeseen events, Akon’s Asian tour must be rescheduled including the July 4th show which will now be held on October 23, 2009. Akon extends his sincere apologies to his many great fans in the Philippines and assures you that the postponement could not be helped. Akon will put on a great show for everyone in October.”

ALV Events International, which is producing the Akon concert, wishes to assure all ticketholders that all tickets purchased prior to July 4 and from hereon will be honored on October 23.

Pupil to front for N.I.N.

Manila’s rock-scene is about to go hardcore in just a few weeks! The Philippines’ very own Pupil, the local hit-makers fronted by Ely Buendia, was recently chosen as the opening act by the international rock band, Nine Inch Nails, coming to Araneta Coliseum this August 5, 2009. Out of a possible ten local bands suggested by Splintr.com, the honor ultimately went to Pupil.

Splintr.com recently confirmed that Pupil was chosen as opening act for Nine Inch Nails, coming to Araneta Coliseum on August 5. The band, fronted by Ely Buendia, who gained fame with his former band, The Eraserheads, is a relative newcomer to the local music scene, having been formed in 2005. Despite being new to the scene, Pupil has already made big waves by winning various awards including ‘Artist of the Year 2008’ at the NU107 Rock Awards and Best Rock Band at the Pasiklaband Awards, 2008.

Nine Inch Nails (N.I.N.) personally chose Pupil among the shortlist provided by Splintr.com. Manila represents the first stop on the Asian leg of the NIN world tour, entitled WAVE GOODBYE. It represents what may be the farewell tour, maybe the last. Frontman and driving force behind NIN, Trent Reznor, indicated that after this tour the band would take an indefinite hiatus to focus on other projects. Taken from their official website, Reznor himself broke the news to his legions of fans “In N.I.N. world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases," Reznor wrote. "I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year."

With the observance of Earth Day on April 22 fast approaching, the media seems to be abuzz with efforts to save the planet and promote a healthy and sustainable environment. More than just preserving the Earth and it's limited resources, such an observance was borne from the world’s growing population and genuine want to provide for ALL.

While Earth Day has been an annual celebration since 1969, it seems like our planet is still plagued with the same dilemma of the “HAVE’S” and “HAVE NOT’S.” Although we worry about building a sustainable lifestyle which will see humanity on through the decades and into the next century, it still pains me that there are just so many who do not have the “basic necessities” that most of us take for granted everyday.

MORE THAN ENOUGH

Given the current resources of our lonely planet, the fact of the matter is that there IS plenty to go around. Poverty and gross inequity can be alleviated if not for the disparate allotment of the Earth’s resources. Millions of men, women and children continue to go hungry while others gorge themselves into obesity or foolishly waste food unsparingly. Some people have no bed to rest in and sleep on cold dirt floors while the lucky ones own comfortable homes - far removed from the poverty that is a way of life for so many of their fellow men.

Mankind is supposed to be the steward of the Earth’s bounty, but it is apparent that we are not living up to this responsibility. Instead of sharing and providing for all, it the virtue of charity has taken a backseat to those who would horde, monopolize, perpetuate greed or just plainly live an apathetic or aloof lifestyle, unaffected by the plight of those who struggle to scrape by on a day-to-day existence.

A MINIATURE EARTH

The fact that you are reading this blog-post makes you one of the HAVE’S as opposed to one of the HAVE NOT’S. Chances are you enjoy access to much of the planet's resources that millions of men, women and children will never experience in a lifetime. But are you fully aware of how lucky you really are?

This brings me to a website that was featured on our radio program just recently. According to a movie found on www.miniature-earth.com, “If the Earth were reduced to 100, it would look something like this…”

The text that originated this movie was published on May 29, 1990 with the title “State of the Village Report”, and it was written by Donella Meadows, who passed away in February 200. Nowadays Sustainability Institute, through Donella’s Foundation, carries on her ideas and projects.

The miniature Earth project was first published in 2001, since then more than 2 million people have visited its website.

The statistics have been updated based on specialized publications, and mainly reports on the World’s population provided by different resources, like UN publications, PRB.org and others. Bear in mind that these are only statistics, and consequently changes might occur after a few months or only after years.

The website’s movie, paints a startling picture of how unfair like is for the vast majority of humankind. By itemizing the statistics of a microcosm of the Earth’s population, the site implores one to ponder what they can do to help their fellow men. ECONOMY & WEALTH: 6 people own 59% of the entire wealth of the entire community, if you have a bank account then you’re one of the 30 wealthiest people in the world

EDUCATION: 14 can’t read, only 7 are educated at a secondary level

HEALTH: 9 are disabled, 13 are hungry or malnourished, 1 adult aged 15-49 has HIV/AIDS

MILITARY SPENDING: The village spends more than US$ 1.12 trillion on military expenditures and only US$ 100 billion on development aid

DAY TO DAY SURVIVAL: 18 people struggle to live on US$ 1.00 per day or less, 53 people struggle to live on US$ 2.00 per day or less
